Description
Steccherinaceae is a family of basidiomycete fungi belonging to the order Russulales. In an agronomic context, these fungi are recognized as wood-decay agents responsible for causing various types of white rot in both forest trees and orchard fruit trees. While primarily saprotrophic, many species act as opportunistic pathogens, invading the heartwood of trees weakened by abiotic stress, injury, or biological agents.
These fungi typically target a wide range of woody hosts, including common fruit species like apple and pear, as well as various hardwood forest species. Infection usually initiates at the site of open wounds—such as poorly sealed pruning cuts, frost cracks, lightning damage, or areas damaged by wood-boring insects. Once the mycelium is established, it begins to degrade the lignin and cellulose in the wood.
The primary symptom of infection is the development of fungal fruiting bodies on the trunk or branches, often featuring a distinct hydnoid (spiny) hymenophore surface. Internally, the wood becomes bleached, soft, and brittle, which is characteristic of white rot. Over time, the internal degradation leads to the formation of cavities and significant loss of structural integrity, often resulting in limb failure or tree collapse.
The spread and development of these fungi are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and poor air circulation within the tree canopy. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind, rainwater splash, and insect vectors. The colonization process is accelerated during damp, temperate weather, which provides optimal conditions for the germination and penetration of the fungal hyphae.
The impact of Steccherinaceae on tree health is severe, leading to reduced productivity, stunted growth, and eventual mortality of the host plant. The economic damage to orchards is cumulative, as affected trees become safety hazards and eventually require removal. Proactive management is the only reliable way to preserve tree longevity and orchard productivity.
- Perform regular sanitation by removing dead or infected wood.
- Seal all pruning wounds promptly with appropriate wound paint or dressings.
- Apply white latex paint to trunks to prevent sunscald and frost cracks.
- Ensure proper spacing and canopy thinning to improve airflow.
- Dispose of infected wood debris away from the orchard to limit spore sources.
