Description
Stemonitaceae are a family of myxomycetes, commonly known as slime molds. Although they are not traditional plant pathogens that derive nutrients directly from living plant tissue, they act as epibionts that can colonize stems and leaves. Their appearance often causes concern among growers due to the rapid growth of visible reproductive structures on healthy plants.
The agent is a plasmodial slime mold, a unique organism that functions as a single-celled multinucleate mass in its active state. They thrive on decaying organic matter, bacteria, and fungal spores. When environmental conditions change, they move onto living surfaces to form sporocarps, which are the visible dark, plume-like structures frequently observed by farmers.
These organisms primarily affect ornamental plants, nursery stock, and vegetable crops grown in high-humidity environments. They are especially prevalent in greenhouses and shaded areas where decaying vegetable matter provides a stable food source and high moisture levels trigger the transition of the mold into the fruiting stage on nearby plants.
The symptoms of infestation are characterized by the appearance of dark, fibrous, or thread-like growths on the foliage. While the plant tissue is not directly consumed, the layer of spores and plasmodium blocks sunlight, reduces gas exchange through stomata, and creates a moist microclimate that invites secondary bacterial and fungal infections.
To control and prevent the spread of Stemonitaceae, management must focus on sanitation and environment modification. Reducing humidity through improved ventilation is the most effective approach. Furthermore, cleaning up leaf litter and organic debris removes the primary food source for the slime molds. In cases where the infestation is persistent, fungicidal treatments may be applied to the affected areas.
