Stemphylium leaf spot, caused by the fungus Stemphylium lycopersici, is a common and destructive foliar disease affecting various solanaceous crops. The pathogen is widespread in diverse climatic zones, often causing significant damage to commercial tomato production and other horticultural plants, including papaya, where it compromises both foliage and fruit health.

The host range of Stemphylium lycopersici is quite broad, primarily targeting tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. The fungus colonizes the plant tissues, initially attacking older, lower leaves before moving upward through the canopy. If conditions remain favorable, it can infect petioles and eventually cause localized lesions on fruits, making them unmarketable.

Diagnostic symptoms include the development of small, circular-to-irregular dark brown or black spots on the leaves. These spots often develop a light-colored necrotic center surrounded by a distinct yellow chlorotic halo. As the disease advances, lesions coalesce, leading to extensive tissue death, leaf curling, and eventual defoliation, which severely reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the host.

The pathogen produces abundant conidia that are easily dispersed by wind, splashing rain, and contact with contaminated equipment. It persists in crop debris and soil, serving as a primary inoculum source for subsequent seasons.
