Stemphylium leaf spot of platycodon

Stemphylium platycodontis

Description

Pathogen and Disease Type: The disease known as Stemphylium leaf spot is caused by the fungus Stemphylium platycodontis. This organism acts as a necrotrophic parasite, invading the host tissues and causing cell death. It belongs to a group of fungi known to cause severe spotting diseases, significantly affecting the foliage of specific susceptible ornamental hosts.

Host Plants: The primary host for this pathogen is the balloon flower, or Platycodon grandiflorus. While it primarily targets this plant species, the disease can become a serious problem in nurseries and gardens where high densities of plants create conditions conducive to the spread of fungal spores among individuals.

Symptoms and Signs: The diagnostic symptoms include the development of circular to irregular brownish spots on the leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots often exhibit concentric zoning, indicating cycles of fungal growth. Under high humidity conditions, the centers of these lesions produce an olive-green to black sporulation layer, which is a key diagnostic feature for identifying this specific pathogen.

Conditions for Development: The proliferation of Stemphylium platycodontis is heavily dependent on moisture. Prolonged leaf wetness, often caused by overhead irrigation or frequent rainfall combined with moderate temperatures (20-25°C), allows the fungal spores to germinate and penetrate the host tissue. Poor air circulation in dense plantings further accelerates the infection cycle.

Harmfulness and Control Measures: The disease causes extensive defoliation, which severely stunts plant growth and reduces the quality of blooms. Effective management involves:

  • Improving sanitation by removing all fallen leaves and debris during winter;
  • Ensuring adequate spacing between plants to maximize airflow;
  • Applying protective fungicides during the early stages of the growing season;
  • Avoiding overhead irrigation to keep the foliage dry as much as possible.
