Stigmatula spot is a fungal disease caused by various species of the genus Stigmatula. As an ascomycete fungus, it primarily affects the foliage and young shoots of specific deciduous trees and shrubs. The pathogen is typically host-specific, causing localized tissue damage that compromises the plant's ability to undergo normal metabolic and photosynthetic activity.

Host plants are generally limited to specific broad-leaved trees, with certain species of oak and woody ornamentals being the most frequent targets. The fungus thrives by infecting leaf tissue, where it establishes a mycelial network that draws nutrients from the host. Over time, this interaction leads to the development of distinct lesions that mar the leaf surface.

Clinical signs of the disease include the appearance of small, irregular or circular spots on the leaves, often accompanied by a dark, necrotic border. Within these lesions, the fungus produces reproductive structures, which manifest as minute black specks visible to the naked eye. Heavy infections often result in leaf curling, premature yellowing, and eventual defoliation, significantly stressing the plant.

Development and spread of Stigmatula are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and frequent rainfall. Spores are easily disseminated through wind or splashing water, allowing the fungus to jump from leaf litter to healthy new growth. Poorly ventilated environments or areas with excessive canopy density provide an ideal microclimate for the fungus to establish and propagate rapidly.

Management of this disease requires an integrated approach focusing on sanitation and preventive maintenance. Removing and destroying fallen leaves is critical, as they serve as the primary overwintering site for the fungus. Additionally, ensuring proper tree spacing and thinning the canopy improves airflow, which reduces humidity levels around the foliage. In severe cases, the targeted application of copper-based fungicides during the early leaf expansion phase can provide effective control.
