Strawberry necrosis is a significant viral disease caused by the Strawberry necrosis virus. It is a systemic infection that compromises the physiological integrity of the plant, often leading to a gradual decline in the plant's health and productivity over time.
The primary host for this pathogen is the cultivated strawberry. While the disease can manifest in various cultivars, some may be more susceptible than others depending on environmental stressors and the genetic background of the plant material used in the plantation.
Key symptoms of the disease include the formation of necrotic spots on the leaves, which often start near the margins or veins. As the disease progresses, affected plants show stunted growth, leaf curling, and overall reduced vigor, which drastically affects the quality and volume of the berry yield.
The virus is spread primarily through infected planting stock, which is the most common way it enters new fields. Furthermore, insect vectors, such as aphids, play a critical role in the transmission of the virus from infected plants to healthy ones within the same field or neighboring plots.
