Description
Eyespot, caused by the fungus Tapesia yallundae (anamorph Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides), is a major soil-borne disease affecting the stem base of cereal crops. This pathogen is globally recognized as a significant threat to wheat and barley production due to its ability to weaken the structural integrity of the crop stems.
The disease primarily targets winter wheat, barley, rye, and triticale. Infection typically begins during cool, damp autumn weather when the fungus attacks the leaf sheaths. However, the most severe economic impact occurs during the spring, when the fungus moves inward to the stem base, interfering with water and nutrient uptake.
Symptoms are identified by oval-shaped lesions on the lower leaf sheaths and the first or second internodes. These lesions often exhibit a distinct dark border with a pale center, resembling an eye, hence the name. As the fungal infection advances, the infected stem tissues become soft and necrotic, ultimately leading to lodging, where plants fall over in patches.
The development of Tapesia is favored by prolonged periods of cool, wet weather and high humidity. The fungus persists on crop debris in the soil, acting as a primary inoculum source for successive cereal crops. Management of the environment, such as avoiding excessive planting density and managing nitrogen application, is crucial for reducing infection risks.
Effective control strategies rely on a combination of cultural practices and chemical interventions. Key measures include maintaining a proper crop rotation, delaying the sowing of winter cereals to minimize early infection, and utilizing systemic fungicides when symptoms appear. Monitoring the crop early in the season is vital for making timely treatment decisions before irreversible stem damage occurs.
