Taphrinaceae is a family of fungi that act as serious plant pathogens, causing various types of diseases collectively referred to as taphrinosis. The most notorious member of this group is Taphrina deformans, which is responsible for the widespread leaf curl disease in peach and nectarine trees. These fungi belong to the Ascomycota phylum and are known for inducing abnormal cell growth, resulting in severe physical deformities of host plant tissues.

These pathogens primarily target stone fruit species, although they can also affect a wide variety of trees and shrubs. The infection process begins early in the spring, as the fungus enters the host through developing buds. Once inside the tissue, the mycelium grows intercellularly, secreting hormones that stimulate uncontrolled cell division and enlargement, leading to the characteristic distortion of leaves and shoots.

The visual symptoms of Taphrinaceae infection are unmistakable: foliage becomes thickened, wrinkled, and often displays shades of red, purple, or pale yellow. As the disease progresses, the infected leaves lose their photosynthetic capacity, wither, and drop prematurely. In addition to leaf damage, the disease can cause shoot swelling and the formation of distorted, inedible fruit, which significantly impacts the overall health and yield of the tree.

The development and spread of these fungi are highly dependent on cool, damp weather conditions during the early growing season. Rain splashes and wind disperse the spores from their overwintering sites on bark and bud scales to new vegetative growth. The critical window for infection occurs when temperatures range between 10 °C and 20 °C, making wet springs particularly hazardous for orchards that lack preventative protection.

Managing Taphrinaceae requires a proactive strategy that emphasizes timing and sanitation. Cultural practices, such as maintaining good air circulation through proper pruning and clearing orchard debris, are essential for reducing inoculum levels. Chemical control is most effective when fungicides are applied as a preventive spray before bud break, as treatment is significantly less effective once the fungus has established itself within the host tissue.
