The disease primarily affects various citrus species, including lemons, oranges, and grapefruit. The infection typically initiates through physical damage, insect bites, or natural openings in the fruit peel. Once inside, the bacteria multiply rapidly, utilizing the sugars and nutrients within the citrus tissue.

Symptoms are distinct and easily identifiable: the internal segment tissue of the infected fruit changes color from normal to a translucent pink or pale red.
