Thalassiosiraceae are a family of diatoms that, while typically found in aquatic environments, often act as bio-fouling agents in hydroponic and greenhouse operations. In this professional context, they are categorized as nuisance organisms that disrupt the efficiency of nutrient delivery systems and adversely affect the root health of cultivated plants.

These organisms predominantly impact hydroponic setups, including nutrient film technique (NFT) systems and substrate-based cultures. Leafy greens, herbs, and young seedlings are the most susceptible crops, as the combination of high-intensity artificial or natural lighting and nutrient-rich solutions creates an environment conducive to rapid algal proliferation.

The characteristic symptoms of a Thalassiosiraceae outbreak include the appearance of golden-brown, slimy, or granular patches on the surface of growing media and reservoir water. As they multiply, they physically clog irrigation emitters and nozzles, which results in inconsistent nutrient distribution and subsequent physiological stress in the crop.

The development and distribution of these algae are driven by exposure to light and an abundance of dissolved nutrients (silicon, phosphorus, and nitrogen). When combined with optimal temperatures ranging from 18°C to 24°C, these organisms can quickly colonize any exposed surface within the irrigation circuit, leading to biofilm formation.

Effective protection and prevention strategies include complete light-proofing of all irrigation components, such as nutrient tanks and transport lines. Integrated management practices involve the use of UV sterilization, ozone treatment of water, periodic chemical disinfection of the irrigation system, and maintaining strict hygiene protocols between production cycles.
