The causal agent of azalea leaf rust is the fungus Thekopsora minima, a basidiomycete pathogen that specifically targets plants within the Rhododendron genus. This disease is particularly impactful in temperate climates where environmental conditions allow for the survival and multiplication of fungal spores. It is a heteroecious fungus, meaning it requires different hosts to complete its complex biological life cycle.

Azaleas (Azalea) are the primary hosts for this rust disease. The fungus thrives in dense plantings where the humidity levels remain consistently high and foliage does not dry quickly after rainfall or overhead irrigation. Younger, weaker plants are often more susceptible to infection, although the disease can quickly spread to healthy specimens if left unmanaged.

Symptoms initially appear as small, yellow-green spots on the upper leaf surface. As the infection progresses, distinct orange or brownish pustules develop on the undersides of the leaves. These pustules are the reproductive structures of the fungus, releasing millions of spores into the air. In severe infections, premature defoliation occurs, which significantly stunts the growth of the shrub.

The spread of Thekopsora minima is largely dependent on weather patterns. High humidity and cool, damp mornings provide the perfect environment for spore germination and infection of the leaves. Once established, the fungus can spread rapidly throughout a landscape via wind currents, rain splash, or contaminated pruning equipment, creating a cycle of infection that persists throughout the growing season.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach centered on sanitation and chemical intervention. Growers should prune and destroy all infected foliage immediately to reduce the inoculum level. Improving air circulation by thinning the plant canopy is also vital. When conditions are favorable for disease development, protective applications of fungicides, including copper-based products or systemic triazoles, are recommended to safeguard the plants.
