Thekopsora minima is a highly specialized rust fungus belonging to the phylum Basidiomycota. It is recognized as the primary causative agent of leaf rust in plants of the Vaccinium genus, notably affecting commercial blueberry and wild blueberry crops globally.
The disease manifests as yellow to orange chlorotic spots on the upper leaf surface of the host plant. During the active infection phase, the fungus produces clusters of pustules on the underside of the leaves, which release masses of powdery spores capable of infecting healthy foliage nearby or at a distance.
The life cycle of this pathogen is heteroecious, meaning it requires two unrelated host species to complete its life cycle. In the case of Thekopsora minima, the needle-leaved evergreen tree hemlock (Tsuga species) serves as the alternate host, where the fungus overwinters and produces spores that infect blueberry plants in the spring.
Optimal environmental conditions for the spread of the disease involve high relative humidity, frequent rain events, and moderate temperatures. Moisture on the leaf surface is critical for spore germination, allowing the fungus to penetrate the plant epidermis and establish a systemic infection that colonizes the host tissues.
The impact on agricultural production is significant, as severe infections lead to premature defoliation. This process drains the plant's energy reserves, weakens the root system, and drastically reduces fruit yield. Effective management strategies include maintaining good air circulation within the canopy, applying appropriate fungicides, and removing alternate hosts from the proximity of berry fields.
