Description
Thermoplasma-related organisms, known as phytoplasmas, are specialized bacteria that lack a cell wall and inhabit the plant's phloem tissue. These pathogens are responsible for severe systemic diseases in a vast array of agricultural crops, causing major economic losses by disrupting the plant's vascular transportation of nutrients and photoassimilates.
The disease affects a diverse range of crops, including Solanaceae (tomatoes, peppers, potatoes), fruit trees, and grapes. Because the pathogen colonizes the phloem, the infection spreads throughout the entire plant system, leading to chronic debilitation and potential crop failure if the infection occurs early in the growing season.
Clinical signs of the disease are diverse but often include yellowing of leaves (chlorosis), stunted growth, shortened internodes, and the proliferation of axillary buds, which results in a bushy, broom-like appearance known as "witches' broom." Flowers may undergo phyllody, where floral parts transform into leaf-like structures, rendering the plant sterile.
Transmission of the pathogen is mediated exclusively by sap-sucking insects, primarily leafhoppers, planthoppers, and psyllids. Once an insect acquires the phytoplasma from an infected plant, it remains a vector for the rest of its life. The spread of the disease is highly correlated with the presence and population density of these insect vectors in the field.
Management of phytoplasmosis focuses on prevention because there are no curative treatments available for infected plants. Effective control strategies involve the use of certified healthy propagation material, strict weed management to remove potential host reservoirs, and the application of integrated pest management (IPM) to control insect vectors. Monitoring fields for the first signs of symptoms allows for the rapid removal of infected plants to limit further spread.
