Thermoplasmata represent a specialized group of microorganisms belonging to the class Mollicutes. In the context of plant pathology, they are closely associated with phytoplasma-like organisms that act as systemic pathogens, impacting the vascular system of various host plants due to their lack of a rigid cell wall.

The disease caused by these pathogens is typically characterized as a systemic infection. The agents reside within the phloem tissues, disrupting the translocation of nutrients and essential metabolites, which eventually leads to the collapse of the plant's physiological functions and overall stunting.

A wide range of crops is susceptible to these infections, including potatoes, tomatoes, various fruit trees, and legumes. Symptoms commonly observed in the field include leaf chlorosis, severe deformation of plant parts, phyllody (flower parts turning into leaf-like structures), and a significant reduction in fruit set and quality.

Transmission and spread of the disease are primarily facilitated by sap-sucking insect vectors, such as leafhoppers and psyllids. These insects acquire the pathogens while feeding on infected plant sap and efficiently transmit them to healthy plants, making the seasonal activity of these insects the primary driver of epidemic spread.

Management strategies focus on preventing the introduction and spread of the pathogen. This includes implementing rigorous sanitation protocols, such as removing infected host plants, controlling weed populations that harbor the pathogen, and applying integrated pest management (IPM) to suppress the populations of insect vectors. There is no curative treatment for infected plants, making proactive prevention the only viable strategy for commercial farming.
