Thyridaria canker is a fungal disease caused by species within the Thyridaria genus, a type of ascomycete fungus. This pathogen primarily acts as a necrotrophic parasite, invading the bark and cambial layers of woody plants. By colonizing these tissues, the fungus disrupts the transport of water and nutrients, ultimately leading to localized or systemic tree decline.

The host range of this disease primarily includes various hardwood species such as maples, oaks, and ashes. Ornamental trees and those in forest stands are equally susceptible, especially if they have been subjected to physiological stress, environmental damage, or improper pruning practices that leave wounds exposed to infection.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as sunken, necrotic patches on the bark. As the disease progresses, these patches may evolve into open, deep cankers. In many cases, the affected area will show clusters of small, dark fruiting bodies of the fungus. Foliage above the infection site often yellows, wilts, and drops prematurely as the branch's vascular system fails.

The development and spread of Thyridaria are highly dependent on high humidity and rainfall, which facilitate the release and germination of fungal spores. The disease thrives in dense, poorly ventilated tree canopies where moisture persists for long periods. Spores are easily disseminated by wind, splashing rain, and occasionally by movement of tools or insects.

Management strategies focus on sanitation and preventive care. Pruning and removing infected branches—ensuring tools are disinfected between cuts—is critical to stop the spread. Furthermore, maintaining tree vigor through appropriate fertilization and preventing mechanical damage to the bark are essential practices to build natural resistance against the colonization of this fungus.
