The causative agent of this disease is the microscopic fungus Tilletia setariicola, which belongs to the class Basidiomycetes. This pathogen causes a specific infection of the plant's reproductive organs, where healthy floral tissues are replaced by a mass of fungal spores. The disease is a type of smut, characteristic of many grass species, manifesting during the inflorescence development stage.

The primary host for this pathogen is the foxtail grass (Setaria species, including green and yellow foxtail). Although foxtail is often considered a weed, in regions where it is utilized as a forage crop, the spread of Tilletia setariicola can lead to significant reductions in green biomass yield and seed quality.

External symptoms of infection become apparent during the flowering stage of the grass. Instead of normal spikelets or plant parts, swollen and deformed growths appear, filled with a black powdery mass of spores. Infected panicles often remain curled, and their development is significantly delayed compared to healthy specimens, making infected plants easily identifiable in the field.

The fungus spreads primarily through the soil and seed material, on the surface of which spores can persist. Disease development is favored by moderate temperatures and high humidity during seed germination and the tillering stage. The pathogen can remain viable in the soil for several years, making crop rotation an essential factor in disease management.
