Tobacco necrosis is a viral plant disease caused by the Tobacco necrosis virus (TNV). This pathogen is known for its wide host range and its ability to persist in the environment, making it a significant challenge for greenhouse and field cultivation worldwide.

The virus is primarily transmitted by the soil-borne chytrid fungus Olpidium brassicae. The zoospores of this fungus ingest or carry the virus particles, infecting the root systems of healthy plants when moisture conditions facilitate fungal movement through the soil.

It affects a diverse group of host plants, including tobacco, potato, tomato, bean, cucumber, and various bulbous ornamentals like tulips. The severity of the infection depends on the host susceptibility and the specific strain of the virus present in the growing medium.

Symptoms vary depending on the host but commonly include necrotic lesions on leaves, stunted growth, leaf distortion, and root rot. In many cases, infected plants show systemic mosaic or necrotic spotting that significantly impairs their photosynthetic capacity and overall marketability.

  • Utilization of virus-free planting stock and seeds.

Effective management requires an integrated approach focusing on vector control and sanitation. Since no chemical treatment can cure a plant from a viral infection once established, preventing the entry of Olpidium brassicae into the root zone remains the most critical strategy for producers.
