Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) is a globally significant plant pathogen belonging to the Orthotospovirus genus. It is considered one of the most destructive viral diseases affecting solanaceous crops, including tomatoes, peppers, and potatoes. Due to its wide host range, the virus poses a constant threat to both greenhouse operations and field-grown agriculture.

The virus is primarily transmitted by several species of thrips, most notably the Western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis). TSWV is acquired by thrips larvae during feeding on infected plant tissue. Once acquired, the virus replicates within the insect, allowing the adult thrips to transmit the pathogen throughout its lifespan, effectively creating persistent sources of infection within a field.

Symptoms of TSWV infection are highly variable, often mimicking other biotic or abiotic stresses, which can complicate diagnosis. Common signs include necrotic rings, bronzing or purple discoloration of leaves, terminal bud necrosis, and stunted growth. Infected fruits often develop irregular mottling, blotchiness, or concentric rings, rendering them unmarketable for both fresh and processing purposes.

The epidemiology of TSWV is dictated by the population dynamics of its insect vectors and the presence of reservoir hosts. The virus thrives in conditions that favor thrips reproduction, such as warm temperatures and the presence of diverse weed populations. In greenhouses, the virus can spread rapidly if preventative sanitation measures are not strictly enforced from the early stages of plant growth.

Effective management requires an integrated approach focusing on vector exclusion and reservoir reduction.

  • Deploying blue or yellow sticky traps for vector monitoring and mass trapping.
  • Applying targeted insecticide programs to suppress thrips populations.
  • Maintaining strict weed control in and around production areas to eliminate virus reservoirs.
  • Removing and destroying symptomatic plants immediately upon detection.
