Description
Rice transitory yellowing is a destructive viral disease caused by the Rice transitory yellowing virus (RTYV). As a viral pathogen, it interferes with the physiological and metabolic functions of the rice plant, leading to stunted growth and severe yield reduction. It is recognized as a significant threat in tropical and subtropical rice-growing regions.
The disease exclusively affects rice (Oryza sativa). It impacts the plant at various growth stages, but the most severe damage is typically observed when the infection occurs during the vegetative stage. Once a plant is infected, the virus spreads through the phloem, causing systemic issues that are often irreversible.
Symptoms are primarily characterized by the yellowing of leaves, which typically starts from the older leaves and progresses toward the younger ones. Affected plants exhibit inhibited tillering, reduced plant height, and the production of malformed or empty panicles, resulting in significant grain yield losses. The term 'transitory' refers to the specific progression of yellowing symptoms in the foliage.
The transmission of RTYV is exclusively facilitated by specific species of leafhoppers, such as Nephotettix apicalis. These insects acquire the virus by feeding on infected plants and subsequently transmit it to healthy ones. The prevalence of the disease is highly dependent on the population density of these insect vectors and environmental conditions favorable for their survival.
