Description
The Treponemataceae family consists of specific microorganisms classified as spirochetes. While they are often discussed in the context of human or animal pathology, in agronomy, these agents are recognized for their ability to cause systemic vascular diseases in plants. The pathogen typically colonizes the phloem, effectively obstructing the transport of nutrients from leaves to roots and other organs.
The disease is categorized as a systemic bacterial vascular infection. Unlike superficial pathogens, these spirochetes inhabit the internal transport system of the host plant. By multiplying within the vessels, they disrupt the physiological processes, leading to the starvation and eventual wilting of plant tissues, which often mimics drought stress even when water is abundant.
Target crops include various woody perennials and certain vegetable species with complex vascular networks. The impact on agricultural productivity is significant, as the infection can lead to stunted growth, poor fruit development, and reduced vigor. In severe cases, the cumulative effect of the vascular blockage results in the death of the entire plant.
Typical symptoms and signs of infestation include:
- Marginal leaf chlorosis and vein yellowing.
- Stunted growth of new shoots and leaves.
- Internal vascular browning visible in cross-sections of stems.
- Abnormal flower development and premature fruit drop.
Conditions favorable for the development and spread of the disease are primarily linked to the presence of insect vectors. Leafhoppers and other phloem-feeding insects serve as the main agents that transmit the bacteria from infected to healthy plants. High temperatures and adequate moisture levels support the activity of these vectors, facilitating wider outbreaks during the growing season.
Management and prevention measures are centered on vector control and strict sanitation. Farmers should implement an integrated pest management (IPM) program to keep populations of sucking insects below the economic threshold. Additionally, the use of certified disease-free planting material, rigorous monitoring for early symptoms, and the prompt removal of symptomatic plants are essential to prevent the spread of the infection within the field.
