The order Triblidiales consists of ascomycetous fungi that primarily exist as saprotrophs but can behave as opportunistic pathogens. Members of this order, belonging to the Lecanoromycetes class, are frequently found on dead or weakened wood, where they contribute to the breakdown of woody tissues in various forest and ornamental tree species.

The disease caused by these fungi is typically characterized as a necrotic canker or bark ulcer. The pathogen initiates infection by penetrating the bark through natural openings, physical wounds, or frost cracks. Once established, the fungus colonizes the cortex and phloem, disrupting the plant's nutrient transport system and causing tissue death.

Susceptible host plants include a wide range of broadleaf trees, such as oaks and maples, as well as certain conifers like spruce and pine. The severity of the impact often depends on the tree's vigor; healthy trees can often wall off the infection, while trees stressed by drought, poor soil quality, or defoliating pests are significantly more vulnerable to colonization.

Visible symptoms include the development of dark, sunken lesions on the branches or main trunk. As the fungus matures, it produces characteristic fruiting bodies known as apothecia, which appear as black, disc-shaped structures breaking through the bark surface. Advanced stages of the disease lead to the death of affected twigs and significant bark exfoliation.
