Trichia scabra is a species of myxomycete, commonly known as a slime mold. Unlike pathogenic fungi, it functions as a saprotroph, feeding on decaying organic matter rather than living plant tissues. However, its presence in agricultural environments is often viewed with concern by growers due to its visual impact on crop stems and foliage.

This organism primarily colonizes damp, rotting plant residues, bark, or mulch. In cultivation, it typically appears at the base of plants when irrigation management is poor or if there is an excessive accumulation of organic debris. It does not actively infect the plant but uses the surface as a substrate for its life cycle, particularly the formation of its characteristic fruit bodies.

The visual signs of Trichia scabra include small, vibrant yellow or orange fruiting structures, known as sporocarps, which develop in clusters. While the slime mold does not extract nutrients from the plant, thick layers of these structures can potentially interfere with light absorption, and their presence serves as an indicator of a problematic, overly humid microenvironment.

Development is highly dependent on humidity levels and ambient temperatures, generally thriving between 15°C and 25°C. Spores are easily disseminated by wind or splashing irrigation water. Once they land on a moist, nutrient-rich surface, they germinate quickly, especially in environments where ventilation is poor and moisture lingers for extended periods.

Management of this slime mold focuses on sanitation and moisture control rather than fungicide application, as it is not a parasitic fungus. Essential practices include improving soil drainage, pruning lower leaves to increase airflow, removing rotting organic debris from the field or greenhouse, and ensuring that watering practices prevent the soil surface from remaining constantly saturated.
