The Trichocomaceae family encompasses a group of ascomycetous fungi that act as primary agents of mold diseases in various agricultural crops. Key genera within this family include Aspergillus and Penicillium. These fungi are essentially saprotrophs that easily transition into opportunistic pathogens when plant tissues are weakened or stored under poor environmental conditions.

These pathogens attack a vast range of plants, including cereals, legumes, oilseeds, and horticultural products. While they can infect crops in the field—particularly those damaged by weather or pests—they are most notorious for causing storage rot. Once the protective outer layers of seeds or fruits are breached, these fungi colonize the internal tissue rapidly, utilizing available carbohydrates and proteins for growth.

Symptoms are typically characterized by the appearance of a powdery or velvety fungal mat on the surface of the infected material. The color of these colonies varies significantly, ranging from white and yellow to deep green, blue, or brown. As the infection progresses, the underlying tissue undergoes decay, often resulting in a mushy texture and a distinct musty odor, rendering the produce unsuitable for processing or consumption.

The proliferation of Trichocomaceae is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high relative humidity (exceeding 70-75%) and warm temperatures. These fungi are adept at surviving adverse conditions due to the production of robust spores (conidia) and sclerotia. Poor ventilation and high moisture content in storage facilities are the most common catalysts for large-scale outbreaks of mold within the harvested crop.

The economic impact of Trichocomaceae extends beyond simple volume loss. The most severe threat posed by these fungi is the production of mycotoxins, such as aflatoxins and ochratoxins. These secondary metabolites are highly toxic to humans and livestock, making contaminated produce a major food safety concern. As a result, even minor infestations can lead to the total rejection of agricultural batches by processors.
