Description
The Trichosporonaceae family consists of yeast-like fungi that are significant in the context of post-harvest phytopathology. While many species exist as saprophytes, several members act as opportunistic pathogens, causing severe decay in a wide range of harvested plant products.
The causative agent reproduces through budding and the formation of arthroconidia. The type of disease is typically characterized as a soft rot or superficial fungal growth. These fungi secrete extracellular enzymes that dissolve plant cell walls, leading to the breakdown of tissues and fluid accumulation in affected areas.
Susceptible crops include fleshy vegetables, fruits, and stored grain products. These fungi often colonize crops that have experienced physiological stress or micro-wounding during harvest. The presence of high sugar content in tissues makes certain fruits particularly vulnerable to infection.
Signs of infestation include the appearance of white, creamy, or slimy colonies on the surface of the produce. As the infection progresses, internal tissues soften and become discolored. A distinguishing characteristic of the presence of Trichosporonaceae is the distinct yeast-like odor emitted from decaying organic matter.
Development is heavily favored by high humidity (often above 85%) and warm temperatures. Spores are easily disseminated through air currents, contact with contaminated surfaces, or by insects within storage facilities. Poor storage management, such as overcrowding or condensation, accelerates the spread of the pathogen.
Management and prevention focus on strictly controlling storage environments. Essential measures include maintaining low humidity and consistent cooling to inhibit fungal metabolic activity. Proper sanitation of equipment, sorting of produce to remove damaged items, and the application of post-harvest treatments are crucial to minimizing economic losses.
