Description
Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) is a major viral disease affecting the Citrus genus, responsible for the death of millions of trees worldwide. The name "tristeza," meaning "sadness" in Portuguese and Spanish, reflects the decline and subsequent death of infected trees, a phenomenon that has historically decimated citrus industries.
The virus is primarily transmitted through two pathways: the movement of infected plant material (scions and rootstocks) and various species of aphids. The brown citrus aphid (Toxoptera citricida) is considered the most efficient vector, as it can transmit the virus rapidly between susceptible hosts.
The symptoms of the disease are diverse and can manifest as slow decline, characterized by sparse foliage and poor fruit production, or as "quick decline," where a tree collapses and dies within a few weeks. Other common indicators include stem pitting, vein clearing in leaves, and an abnormal accumulation of starch above the graft union.
Environmental conditions that favor the rapid reproduction of aphid vectors are critical factors in the spread of CTV. High humidity and moderate temperatures often accelerate the spread of the virus, making rigorous monitoring of vector populations essential in regions where the virus is endemic.
Managing the disease is challenging because once a tree is infected, there is no chemical cure. Therefore, the strategy focuses entirely on prevention and exclusion:
- Planting only virus-tested, certified disease-free nursery stock.
- Using rootstocks that are tolerant or resistant to specific CTV strains.
- Implementing strict quarantine procedures to prevent the introduction of new virus strains.
- Applying insecticides to manage aphid vector populations in the orchard.
