Description

Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) is a highly destructive plant viral pathogen belonging to the genus Closterovirus. It is recognized globally as one of the most significant threats to citrus production, capable of causing widespread decline and tree mortality in various citrus species.

The virus impacts a variety of hosts, including sweet oranges, grapefruits, and limes. The severity of the symptoms is often determined by the combination of the viral strain, the host species, and, crucially, the type of rootstock used. The classic "quick decline" syndrome is particularly common in trees grafted onto sour orange rootstock.

The biology of CTV involves specialized transmission through insect vectors, primarily aphids like Toxoptera citricida. Once an aphid acquires the virus from an infected plant, it can transmit the pathogen to healthy trees through stylet-borne or persistent feeding, spreading the virus throughout an orchard.

Development and spread are facilitated by warm climates and the trade of infected nursery stocks. Because the virus can remain latent, asymptomatic trees often serve as silent reservoirs, making the pathogen extremely difficult to detect and eradicate without rigorous diagnostic testing.

Controlling the spread of the virus requires a multi-faceted approach centered on exclusion and suppression strategies:

  • Utilizing certified virus-free nursery stock for all new plantations.
  • Replacing susceptible rootstocks with tolerant or resistant varieties.
  • Monitoring aphid populations and implementing timely chemical control measures.
  • Applying serological and molecular diagnostic methods for early detection of latent infections.
