Description

Plant trypanosomatiasis is a destructive vascular disease caused by protozoan parasites belonging to the family Trypanosomatidae, specifically the genus Phytomonas. These flagellated organisms inhabit the phloem sap of plants, where they proliferate and obstruct the translocation of photoassimilates, leading to significant physiological stress.

The disease primarily impacts tropical and subtropical crops, with significant economic losses documented in coconut palms, oil palms, coffee plants, and various species of Euphorbiaceae. The infestation is systemic, meaning the pathogen can spread throughout the vascular network of the entire plant once established.

Key symptoms include systemic wilting, chlorosis, necrosis of leaf tissues, and premature fruit shedding. As the infection progresses, the disruption of the phloem transport leads to stunted development of new shoots and, eventually, the total collapse of the plant due to nutritional deprivation and the systemic spread of the parasite.

The transmission mechanism is mediated by insect vectors, primarily true bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). When these insects feed on an infected plant, they ingest the protozoa, which then undergo development within the insect's gut before being injected into a healthy host plant during subsequent feeding sessions.

Management of plant trypanosomatiasis requires an integrated approach focusing on vector control. This includes:

  • Regular inspection and monitoring of insect populations.
  • Application of systematic insecticides to reduce vector density.
  • Elimination of alternative weed hosts that act as reservoirs for Phytomonas.
  • Usage of resistant plant varieties where available.
