Sea lettuce (Ulva lactuca) is a fast-growing green macroalgae species that acts as a significant environmental stressor for agricultural activities located near brackish or coastal waters. While not a traditional plant disease, its excessive growth (algal blooms) constitutes a major disruption to aquatic agricultural systems and irrigation networks.

The organism belongs to the phylum Chlorophyta. Its primary impact is biological and chemical: it rapidly absorbs nutrients, creating dense mats that block sunlight from reaching the water column and triggering eutrophication. When these mats die and decompose, they deplete dissolved oxygen, leading to hypoxic conditions in the surrounding area.

Affected crops primarily include rice paddies and aquaculture species. The signs of damage involve the suffocating of young seedlings due to low oxygen levels in the irrigation water and the accumulation of hydrogen sulfide produced by the decaying algae, which can effectively poison the root systems of the crop.
