Description

The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Ustilaginoidea virens, an ascomycete pathogen that causes significant economic losses in rice cultivation worldwide. It specifically targets the reproductive parts of the plant during the flowering stage.

Rice is the primary host for this fungus. The pathogen colonizes the florets, replacing the developing grains with large, velvet-like spore balls that transform the structure of the panicle completely.

Symptoms are easily identifiable: as the grain matures, distinct spherical masses develop on the panicle. These structures start as bright yellow or orange but gradually darken to a dark olive green or black color as the spores ripen and are released.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in disease development. High relative humidity (above 90%) combined with frequent rainfall and moderate temperatures during the flowering period creates an ideal environment for the spores to germinate and infect the host.

The damage caused by false smut is twofold. Firstly, it leads to a direct reduction in grain yield and quality. Secondly, it creates serious food safety concerns, as the fungus produces toxic compounds like ustilaginooxins, which are harmful to human and animal health.

Management strategies focus on a multi-pronged approach to minimize infestation:

  • Selection and planting of resistant or tolerant rice varieties.
  • Use of certified, disease-free seed lots.
  • Field sanitation including the removal and destruction of infected crop residues.
  • Application of appropriate fungicides during the booting stage and at the onset of flowering to prevent spikelet infection.
