The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Ustilago isoetis, a member of the Ustilaginaceae family. It is a highly specialized parasite that exclusively affects plants of the genus Isoëtes (quillworts). As quillworts occupy specific ecological niches in wetlands and aquatic habitats, the fungus has evolved a life cycle that perfectly synchronizes with the development of its host.

This disease is classified as a smut, characterized by the replacement of the host's reproductive organs with a mass of dark, powdery teliospores. The fungus typically invades the quillwort's tissues systemically. During the maturation phase, the fungus directs the host's resources toward the production of fungal spores instead of the plant's own reproductive structures, effectively sterilizing the host plant.

Symptoms of the infection become apparent during the plant's sporulation stage. The typical symptoms include the swelling and blackening of the spore-bearing tissues. When these tissues rupture, they release a dark, sooty mass of spores into the surrounding environment. This process can cause visible malformations in the quillwort leaves or bases, making the infected individuals easy to distinguish from healthy plants.

These conditions facilitate the contact of fungal spores with new, healthy quillwort specimens, allowing for efficient transmission within local populations.
