Description
Venturia leaf spot of poplar is a serious fungal disease caused by the pathogen Venturia macularis (often referred to as Pollaccia radiosa in its asexual stage). This pathogen primarily targets young poplar trees, leading to severe foliage damage and stunted growth in nursery settings and young plantations.
The primary hosts of this disease are members of the Populus genus, particularly the quaking aspen and various hybrid poplars. Young saplings are exceptionally susceptible, as the fungus specifically attacks the rapidly developing, soft tissues of new shoots and leaves during the early spring season.
Initial symptoms include the appearance of brown or black spots on the leaves, which expand rapidly. A diagnostic feature of this infection is the curling and blackening of shoot tips, often resembling a shepherd’s crook. Under high humidity, a characteristic olive-black fungal growth becomes visible on the infected leaf and stem surfaces.
Disease development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly extended periods of wet weather and cool temperatures during the bud-break phase. The pathogen survives the winter in fallen leaves and infected twigs, releasing spores that are disseminated by wind and splashing rain to susceptible host tissues in the spring.
The economic and ecological impact involves significant biomass loss, aesthetic degradation of landscapes, and potential dieback of young trees. To effectively manage and mitigate the impact of this disease, integrated strategies are essential:
- Sanitation through the removal and destruction of infected leaf litter and twigs.
- Applying preventive fungicides during the early leaf-emergence stage.
- Selecting and planting resistant poplar clones and varieties.
- Implementing wide spacing in plantations to improve air circulation and reduce humidity.
