Description

The genus Volvariella is primarily known as a group of saprotrophic fungi, but in specific agricultural settings, it can behave as an opportunistic pathogen. While not typical plant diseases in the classical sense, certain species pose a significant threat to commercial mushroom production and can interfere with the nutrient uptake of plants in highly organic soils.

The causative agents are basidiomycete fungi from the Pluteaceae family. The disease type is defined as a mycogonic infection of substrates or a competitive displacement of beneficial soil microflora. This type of infestation is particularly damaging when the natural biological balance of the cultivation environment is compromised.

The cultures most susceptible to Volvariella infestation are mushroom cultivation blocks (such as those for Agaricus or Pleurotus species). In the field, it affects decomposing organic matter, which indirectly impacts plant health by competing for nutrients or producing inhibitory secondary metabolites in the root zone.

Symptoms of infestation include the appearance of characteristic fruiting bodies with a distinct volva at the base. In cultivation setups, the pathogen's mycelium aggressively colonizes the medium, causing a rapid decline in the health of the primary crop. Signs also include discoloration of the substrate, a musty odor, and the rapid formation of fungal primordia where they are not desired.

Favorable conditions for Volvariella development include temperatures between 25°C and 35°C and high relative humidity levels. To protect crops, growers must maintain strict hygiene, ensure proper pasteurization of growing media, and implement regular monitoring of moisture levels. Chemical control should be used as a last resort, focusing primarily on prevention through optimal environmental management.
