Candlesnuff fungus (Xylaria hypoxylon) is a saprobic and occasionally parasitic fungus belonging to the Xylariaceae family. In agronomic and forestry sectors, this fungus is identified as a pathogen causing white rot in wood, predominantly affecting trees that have been weakened by environmental stressors or mechanical injury.

The host range of this fungus primarily encompasses deciduous trees and shrubs, including various fruit trees and woody ornamentals. While it thrives mainly on decaying wood such as logs and stumps, it can also infect living trees through open wounds, pruning cuts, or areas where the bark has been damaged, leading to progressive tissue degradation.

Visible symptoms include the development of distinctive, branched, antler-like stromata. These structures are typically black and hardened, often showing white, powdery tips during the active spore production phase. Internally, the wood undergoes structural changes, becoming soft, bleached, and crumbly as the fungus breaks down lignin and cellulose components, significantly reducing the tree's structural integrity.

The development and spread of the fungus are heavily dependent on humidity and temperature. It spreads through wind-dispersed spores that find suitable entry points on host surfaces. Once established, the mycelium penetrates deep into the wood tissue. Prolonged periods of damp weather during the autumn months create the most favorable conditions for both sporulation and colonization of new substrates.

Management practices focus on preventative measures rather than curative treatments. Key strategies include:

  • Maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization and watering.
  • Performing regular sanitary pruning to remove dead or diseased branches.
  • Applying protective sealants to pruning cuts to prevent fungal entry.
  • Ensuring proper orchard sanitation by removing old stumps and woody debris.

Prompt identification and removal of infected stromata can help reduce the local spore load in the environment, thereby protecting healthy plant stocks from further infection and decay.
