Zoopagomycotina is a subphylum of fungi primarily recognized as obligate endoparasites of small soil invertebrates such as nematodes and amoebae. While they are not classified as primary plant pathogens, their ecological interactions within the rhizosphere can significantly influence the health and development of various crops in agricultural and horticultural settings.
The pathogenicity of these organisms is largely indirect. By parasitizing soil-dwelling organisms that interact with plant roots, they can alter the balance of the soil microbiome. In cases where populations become unbalanced, the presence of excessive mycelial growth can lead to nutrient uptake inefficiencies and physiological stress for the host plant.
Symptoms of an unstable rhizospheric environment associated with fungal proliferation often include stunted growth, chlorosis, and poor vigor in seedlings. Plants may also show signs of root system distress, where secondary root development is restricted, resulting in reduced nutrient translocation and overall lower biomass production.
Development conditions for Zoopagomycotina are heavily dependent on high soil moisture levels, the availability of organic matter, and specific temperature ranges (typically between 15°C and 25°C). Waterlogged soils and poor drainage are the primary environmental factors that promote the proliferation of these organisms, facilitating their spread through the soil profile.
Protective measures focus on soil management and ecological balance. Improving soil drainage, aeration, and implementing strict crop rotation protocols are effective ways to suppress overpopulation. Additionally, the strategic use of beneficial microorganisms, such as Trichoderma spp., can help maintain a healthy microbial environment, thereby preventing the negative secondary effects associated with high activity of these soil fungi.
