Description
Septoria leaf blotch, caused by the fungal pathogen Zymoseptoria tritici, is a major disease affecting wheat production worldwide. It primarily manifests as a foliar blight, significantly impacting the photosynthetic capacity of the plants and leading to substantial yield losses in favorable environmental conditions.
The disease targets wheat species and can infect crops at any stage of development. The fungus survives primarily on crop debris from the previous season and on volunteer wheat or early-sown winter wheat crops, which serve as a bridge for the pathogen to spread during the growing season.
Initial symptoms include chlorotic spots on lower leaves that gradually expand into irregular, reddish-brown blotches. As the lesion matures, the presence of small, black fruiting bodies called pycnidia becomes visible within the spots. These structures are a key diagnostic feature distinguishing this disease from other leaf spot infections.
The development of the disease is highly dependent on humidity and temperature. Frequent rainfall and temperatures between 15°C and 22°C are ideal for pycnidial maturation and spore dispersal. Spores are primarily spread through "splash dispersal," where raindrops splash the inoculum from lower infected leaves onto upper, healthy foliage.
The economic impact of Septoria is significant due to the reduction in the leaf area available for photosynthesis, especially when the flag leaf is affected. This restriction limits grain filling, resulting in reduced thousand-kernel weight and lower grain quality, which can decrease total harvest volume by up to 50% in severe cases.
