Description
Fatima is a mid-late spring barley variety created by the German scientist Martin Breu through crossing the Tam Tam and Sunshine varieties. It belongs to brewing varieties and is recommended for cultivation in the Central region of Russia, specifically in the Ivanovo and Ryazan regions. The vegetative period ranges from 74 to 92 days, allowing the variety to mature simultaneously with varieties such as Elf and Nadzhy, slightly later than Vladimir and slightly earlier than Yaromir. The plant has a short or medium height with an intermediate bush type, glumes of lower leaves are hairless, and the flag leaf auricles are colored with a medium anthocyanin shade with a medium-intensity waxy bloom.
The ear of the Fatima variety is cylindrical with medium density, covered with a medium waxy bloom. Awns are longer than the ear, serrated along the entire length, and have bright anthocyanin coloration at the tips. The first segment of the ear rachis is of medium length and curvature; the sterile spikelet is deflected. The grain varies from large to very large, with a hairless ventral groove and an embracing lodicule. The mass of 1000 grains ranges from 42 to 52 grams.
The variety is characterized by good drought resistance, comparable to the Vladimir and Yaromir varieties, and moderate resistance to loose smut. However, it is susceptible to striped rust and net blotch, as well as prone to helminthosporiosis and dark brown blotch. The average yield in the Central region is about 33 centners per hectare, with the maximum yield reaching 59.9 centners per hectare in the Ryazan region. Due to its characteristics and stable productivity, the Fatima variety is popular among farmers engaged in brewing barley.
