Description
Kazminskiy is a new resource-saving variety of six-row spring barley intended for grain-forage use. The ear of the variety is cylindrical, yellow, of medium length from 6 to 8 cm, and dense. The grain is oval-shaped, yellow, varies from small to medium-large depending on weather conditions, and the mass of 1000 grains is 35-43 g. The grain base is bare and cut, with a narrow groove, and the main awn at the base is densely hairy. Awns are yellow, long, exceeding the ear length by 1.5-2 times, with no serration on the edges and weak spreading. During harvesting, the variety threshes well. The variety is characterized by early maturity; the duration of the vegetative period is from 61 to 71 days. Kazminskiy is medium-height and medium-early, stable against lodging with an assessment from 3.5 to 5 points on a five-point scale. It has medium resistance to diseases such as striped and netted helminthosporiosis but is susceptible to powdery scab, so seed treatment before sowing is mandatory. Protein content in the grain varies from 12.5 to 15.1 %, averaging 13.7 %, and lysine from 2.3 to 3.3 %, which corresponds to standards. Starch in the grain is about 53 %. The yield of the Kazminskiy variety is high and stable. In competitive trials, the average yield reached 2.91 t/ha, which is 0.56 t/ha higher than standard varieties. In various regions, including the Far East region, Khabarovsk Krai, and the Jewish Autonomous Oblast, the variety showed an increase over standards from 0.26 to 0.81 t/ha. Maximum yield was recorded in 2007 at the Tambov State Variety Site in the Amur Oblast and amounted to 5.23 t/ha. Kazminskiy is a promising variety for the forage direction, combining high productivity, stability to adverse conditions, and good grain technological qualities.
