Genetic Potential and Morphology

The winter six-row barley variety "Lester" from the Czech breeding company Selgen is an intensive cultivar adapted to Central and Eastern European conditions. A key feature of this material lies in its planting architecture: a compact canopy with a height of 70–80 cm minimizes lodging risks, which is a critical factor when applying high nitrogen fertilizer doses. The six-row spike type ensures a high density of productive tillers per square meter, directly translating into final gross yield.

Phytosanitary Protection at a Genetic Level

Selgen’s breeding focus for this variety is aimed at reducing fungicide dependency. "Lester" possesses built-in resistance to the most aggressive cereal pathogens:

• Fusarium head blight: significantly lowers mycotoxin levels in the grain, which is essential for feed and malting value.
• Loose smut (Ustilago nuda): a genetic barrier prevents infection even under unfavorable temperature conditions during the tillering stage.

These parameters are complemented by high tolerance to Helminthosporium and onion stalk smut, allowing agronomists to optimize spray schedules and eliminate unnecessary machinery passes.

Grain Mass and Quality

The thousand-grain weight (TGW) ranges between 42–44 grams. For a six-row barley, this is an optimal indicator, signaling high grain filling while maintaining a high count per spike. This morphology ensures a stable yield of marketable product even under stressful maturation conditions, providing robust germination energy and uniform emergence during the autumn cycle.
