Description
The tall blueberry variety Darrow was developed in 1965 and has since enjoyed well-deserved popularity due to its large berries and stable yield. The bushes reach a height of 1.5-2.1 meters, have an upright, slightly spreading habit with a dense crown. Leaves are oval, dark green with a glossy surface in summer and turn orange-red in autumn, giving the plant decorative appeal throughout the season. Flowers are bell-shaped, pink or white, arranged in long racemes, blooming later than other varieties, which reduces the risk of flower buds being damaged by frost.
The berries of the Darrow variety are very large, reaching 21 mm and more in diameter, weighing up to 4 grams, with dense flesh and a thin waxy coating. They have a rich flavor with a slight tartness and pleasant aroma, which especially develops when fully ripe. The berries are dark blue or blue in color, hanging in drooping clusters. Harvesting occurs at the end of summer — August to September, and can be done multiple times during the season, allowing up to 5-9.5 kg of berries per bush. The variety is suitable for fresh consumption, freezing, and baking.
Darrow is distinguished by high frost resistance, tolerating temperatures down to -30...-35 °C, and well withstands seasonally waterlogged soils. The plant prefers sunny spots with acidic, moderately moist soil, requiring regular watering, especially during dry periods. The variety is disease-resistant but sensitive to branch scalding and is not suitable for mechanical harvesting. For better fruiting, it is recommended to plant alongside other blueberry varieties for cross-pollination. Due to its decorative appearance and high yield, blueberry Darrow is an excellent choice for gardeners who value large berries with rich flavor and attractive bush appearance throughout the season.
