Purpose and Design Features of the BDR

The heavy-duty trailed disc harrow (BDR) is a specialized tillage implement designed for intensive processing of heavy soils, soddy layers, crop residues, and seedbed preparation. Unlike light disc harrows, the BDR is characterized by an increased working organ diameter (650 to 800 mm) and higher mass per disc, which provides a working depth of up to 20-25 cm. The unit features a rigid frame structure with an X-shaped or V-shaped disc gang arrangement, which eliminates the "ridging" effect in the field.

Working Organs and Working Depth

The primary working element of the BDR is a "daisy" or smooth disc made of wear-resistant boron steel. The spherical shape of the discs, combined with an aggressive angle of attack, allows not only for cutting weed roots but also for effectively mixing soil layers with organic mass. Adjusting the angle of attack within the 15-30 degree range enables the operator to adapt the harrow to a specific soil type, ranging from light loams to high-density heavy chernozems.

Frame and Hitch System

The BDR frame is manufactured from high-strength profile steel with reinforcement at the mounting points for disc gang stands. The hitch device is equipped with a hydraulically controlled drawbar, facilitating maneuvering and turning on narrow headlands. The hydraulic system ensures the conversion of the harrow from transport to working position and regulates working depth by altering the section tilt. Transport wheels are equipped with low-pressure tires, which minimizes soil compaction during field transit.

Aggregation and Traction Requirements

Effective operation of the BDR requires a tractor in the 3 to 5 traction class, depending on the working width and depth. Aggregation is carried out via a standard hitch. It is crucial to maintain a speed range of 8-12 km/h; exceeding this speed leads to uneven disc penetration, while lower speeds result in poor soil crumbling. The tractor's high torque is essential to overcome resistance when performing deep loosening in virgin soil areas.

Application in Agricultural Operations

The BDR is indispensable for primary autumn tillage, especially after harvesting corn for grain or sunflower. The implement crushes large stalks and incorporates them to a depth of 10-15 cm, accelerating the mineralization process of crop residues. The harrow is also effective in eradicating weeds on fallow land, serving as a primary tillage tool before plowing or secondary discing.

Maintenance and Operational Reliability

The BDR design is highly maintainable. Disc gang mounting points are equipped with easy-to-grease bearing units, protected against dust and moisture ingress. A daily check of bolt tightening on the frame and sections is recommended, as dynamic loads from rocky soil can cause them to loosen. High-quality disc steel provides a service life of up to 1000-1500 hectares of operation, provided maintenance protocols are followed.

Target Audience for the Equipment

This type of equipment is optimal for farms with land banks of 500+ hectares that utilize conventional or minimum tillage systems. The BDR is a versatile "heavyweight" capable of replacing a plow when moisture-conserving tillage is required.
