Description
French genetics in the field: operating the «Codex» hybrid
When selecting seeds from Maisadour Semences, farmers look for consistency and reliability. «Codex» is one of those hybrids that meets expectations for both yield and ease of management. As a producer, I would note that while the flinty grain type requires precise combine adjustment during harvest, the high-quality commodity output justifies the effort.
Agronomic performance and plant health
The 110–120 day maturity window allows for effective harvest planning. In our field conditions, this hybrid has proven to be quite resilient. Its resistance to common smut is visibly excellent, with ears remaining clean even under high humidity levels. The plant's natural defense against fusarium and stalk rots is a significant advantage, particularly in wet autumns, as it reduces the need for heavy fungicide applications.
Seeding density and management
We tested two density approaches, and the results were clear:
- 80–85k plants/ha is ideal for maximizing grain weight in standard moisture conditions.
- 90–95k plants/ha is justified in highly fertile soils with intensive feeding, where the hybrid maximizes silage biomass production.
The dual-purpose nature of «Codex» (suitable for both grain and silage) makes it a smart inventory choice for any farm. It is a forgiving hybrid that performs well under varied agronomic practices, ensuring stability and protecting against major crop diseases.

Dent corn (Zea mays indentata) — Large, elongated, flat kernels. The endosperm is horny on the sides of the kernel, mealy in the center and at the top. A depression forms at the top of the kernel upon ripening. Dent corn is the most widely cultivated group among others. Plants ty... |

Dual-purpose hybrids: for silage and grain in all growing regions. These are "stay-green" type hybrids, meaning the plants remain green for a longer period. However, this does not affect the sugar, cellulose, and hemicellulose content, nor the degree of lignification of the plant... |
