French genetics in the field: our experience with Luigi CS

When we first introduced the Luigi CS hybrid from Caussade Semences to our fields, our primary goal was crop stability for grain production. As a simple hybrid with flint-dent grain, it has proven to be a highly predictable and adaptive choice. The FAO range of 90–1240 offers us the flexibility needed during the sowing season, which is essential given today's unpredictable weather patterns.

Field performance and disease resistance

The standout feature for any operator using this hybrid is its overall vigor. In fields with moderate to high disease pressure, Luigi CS has held its own. Here is what we found during the growth cycle:

• High resistance to Helminthosporium ensures we don't have to overspend on mid-season fungicide applications.
• Excellent resistance to Fusarium keeps the ears clean, even when late-season rains threaten the crop.
• Strong resistance to stalk smut maintains stem integrity, making harvest much easier and reducing field losses.

Agronomic practices

We've found that sticking to the recommended planting density of 75,000–80,000 seeds/ha yields the best results. At this density, the plants don't compete for resources, leading to full, well-developed ears. Harvesting Luigi CS is a straightforward process: the stalks remain upright and sturdy, allowing the combine to operate at an optimal speed without yield loss. The grain has excellent dry-down characteristics, which keeps our post-harvest drying costs well within the budget. It’s a reliable, low-maintenance hybrid that delivers consistent results for the professional farmer.
