The 'Black Velvet' (Chernyy Barkhat) gladiolus, developed by V.A. Kolos, represents a high-intensity decorative form characterized by dense, ruffled petals. With a total stem height of 120–140 cm, the spike itself occupies 60–80 cm. This ratio ensures optimal support for 8–10 simultaneously blooming flowers with a diameter of 13–15 cm. The geometry of the deeply ruffled petals creates a light-absorbing effect, which intensifies the depth of the color.

• Olfactory Profile: Unlike many modern hybrids, 'Black Velvet' possesses a distinct fragrance, adding significant value to landscape design applications.
• Blooming Potential: The variety exhibits an extended vegetation period and prolonged bud retention, which is critical for mass landscaping and creating static floral arrangements.
• Environmental Resilience: Due to moderate weather resistance, site selection must prioritize protection from high wind loads. Given the high center of gravity of the inflorescence, staking is recommended for open-field cultivation to maintain vertical growth.

Due to its genetic profile, the plant lacks winter hardiness. To maintain reproductive capacity, annual lifting of the corms after the vegetation period is mandatory.
