Engineering approach to the breeding of gladiolus 'Laura'

The development of the 'Laura' variety by the I.V. Michurin Federal Research Center team (O.A. Karpov, B.A. Kuzichev, O.A. Kuzicheva) is based on creating a stable plant habit. Unlike tall hybrids that require mandatory staking, 'Laura' demonstrates an optimal balance between stem height (80–120 cm) and peduncle rigidity. The compact structure of the bush reduces wind resistance, allowing the crop to be successfully grown outdoors without the risk of lodging during strong winds.

Morphological indicators and flower architecture

A key technical parameter of 'Laura' is the star-shaped perianth. This geometry provides increased resistance of the petals to mechanical damage and precipitation. The flower diameter in the 9–13 cm range is balanced: it does not weigh down the inflorescence, maintaining the overall aesthetics of the plant for cut flower use.

• Color palette: The transition from pure white to soft cream shades makes the variety a universal tool for landscape design.
• Flowering resource: The genetic architecture of the variety is oriented towards prolonged bud opening, which extends the decorative period.
