Description
Spring oat variety Bekas is a naked-seeded mid-season variety with a vegetation period of 70-86 days, maturing several days earlier than standard varieties Konkurs and Yakov. The plant is tall, medium height, with lodging resistance and an intermediate bush type. The panicle is two-sided with semi-erect branch arrangement; spikelets are drooping, and the glume is medium length with a waxy coating. The 1000-grain mass varies from 22 to 33 grams, and grain natural density is 510-650 g/l. The variety is distinguished by high protein content — up to 19.7%, making it valuable in quality terms.
Bekas demonstrates good adaptation to various climatic conditions and is recommended for cultivation in the Middle-Volga region and Samara region. The maximum yield of the variety reached 53.1 c/ha, while the average regional yield is about 23 c/ha. The variety is resistant to stem rust, but susceptible to powdery bunt and crown rust. Due to its characteristics, Bekas is a promising variety for cultivation both in Russia and in the eastern part of the Left-Bank Forest-Steppe of Ukraine.
Research conducted in Ukraine confirms the high yield and good agronomic traits of the Bekas variety, including grain number per heads and grain mass. These indicators are closely correlated with yield, making the variety attractive for breeding work and further use in agricultural production. Bekas is suitable for grain product production, including flour and other food products, due to its high technological and nutritional qualities.
