The 'Dzhigit' shallot variety, developed by breeders at the Dnipropetrovsk Experimental Station (NAAS of Ukraine), is the result of targeted selection focused on stabilizing multi-bulb development. Unlike common bulb onions, this variety forms a nest of multiple fully developed bulbs. This physiological trait dictates the vegetation pattern: the plant's energy is not directed toward forming a single large mass, but toward the synchronous development of a system containing 5–8 (sometimes up to 10) daughter bulbs.

Morphological Features and Technical Parameters

The core value of 'Dzhigit' lies in its maturity and structural integrity. Within Ukrainian soil and climatic zones, the variety demonstrates a high propagation coefficient. Technically, this translates into several key advantages:

• Nest Compactness: The bulbs feature dense outer scales, which is critical for preventing mechanical damage during harvesting and subsequent long-term storage.
• Chemical Composition: Due to high dry matter and sugar content, 'Dzhigit' exhibits superior shelf life, maintaining commercial quality until late spring without significant mass loss.
• Size Range: The average weight of an individual bulb in a nest ranges from 30 to 60 grams, which is considered the 'gold standard' for culinary use and industrial processing.

Practical Application in Agrocenosis

Choosing 'Dzhigit' shallots is justified when early marketable production is required. Thanks to its genetics, the variety exhibits resistance to bolting, even during spring temperature fluctuations. When planted before winter or in early spring, 'Dzhigit' efficiently utilizes soil moisture reserves to rapidly build vegetative mass. Its root system is more compact than that of common onions, making it responsive to intensive fertilization schemes while remaining sensitive to soil structure.
