Description
SZM 85 is a mid-ripening field pea variety (pelushka) primarily intended for fodder use. It is distinguished by high resistance to grain shattering, which aids in crop retention during harvesting. Protein content in the grain reaches 25%, and in dry matter up to 21%, making this variety a valuable source of nutrients for fodder production. Maximum grain yield is 38.1 c/ha, and dry matter yield is 116.2 c/ha, confirming the high productivity of the variety under proper cultivation conditions.
Pea SZM 85 is recommended for cultivation in central regions of Russia, including the Yaroslavl region, where it shows good results due to adaptation to local soil and climatic conditions. Unlike field peas, pelushka grows better on cold, heavy, and sandy soils, which expands its application possibilities. To increase yield and lodging resistance, breeders focus on morphophysiological indicators such as stem linear density and leaf photosynthetic activity, which contributes to improved economic qualities of the variety.
SZM 85 is widely used in fodder production, where not only grain but also green mass, straw, and processing by-products are valued. For green fodder production, peas are sown at a rate of 1–1.5 million viable seeds per hectare, cutting the plants 1–2 weeks before flowering and during flowering to maximize nutrient accumulation. This approach allows peas to be used in the green conveyor system for 15–20 days, as well as in silage mixtures, making it a versatile crop for fodder bases.
