Description
Radish is a popular spring root crop known for its slightly spicy taste, which is due to the presence of mustard oil. This vegetable is rich in vitamins and minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, silicon, and vitamin C, which helps strengthen the immune system and improve digestion. Due to early maturity, radish is one of the first vegetables of the spring-summer season, which makes it especially valuable for cleansing the body after winter.
For successful cultivation of radish, it is important to choose well-lit areas with loose and fertile soil. Ideal predecessors include cucumbers, cabbage, and potatoes. The soil is recommended to be prepared in advance, adding compost or manure, as well as mineral fertilizers such as superphosphates and potash salts. Under conditions of heavy clay soils, radish is often grown in raised beds or portable boxes with prepared soil mixed with peat and fertilizers.
Sowing seeds is done in furrows 5-8 cm deep with a distance between them of 12-15 cm, and between plants after thinning - about 5 cm. To prevent flowering with a daylight of more than 12 hours, radish is covered with opaque covers at night. In hot weather, regular evening watering is necessary, while it is important not to wash away the soil around the root crops. To protect against pests, natural means such as tobacco with ash or ground pepper are used. The vegetation period of radish varies from 18 to 45 days depending on the variety, which allows growing it both in open ground and in greenhouses.
