Description
Managing the cultivation of large-root radishes
The «Troyandova» variety, developed by the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of the NAAS, is not a typical small-sized radish. Dealing with a root weight ranging from 200 to 600 grams requires a professional approach to planting density. If the spacing is too tight, the expanding roots will push each other out of the ground, leading to uneven development and physical damage.
Cultivation and maintenance tips
With a maturation period of 60–70 days, «Troyandova» falls into a later category than standard spring radishes. Achieving a high-quality, large-caliber harvest requires specific soil and water management.
- Soil quality: Heavy soils are not suitable for this variety. To allow the root to reach its potential weight (400–600g) without cracking, use loose, organic-rich soil.
- Irrigation: Consistency is essential. Fluctuations between dry soil and heavy irrigation will cause the red skin to crack and the internal tissue to become spongy.
- Harvesting: The round shape and size make this radish partially emerge from the soil, which significantly simplifies the manual harvesting process and allows you to inspect the roots before picking.
The variety is highly adapted to spring and summer cultivation and shows good resistance to long daylight hours. Avoid over-fertilizing with nitrogen during the final growth stage; otherwise, you risk losing the density of the flesh. "Troyandova" rewards the grower who maintains a stable, stress-free environment for the plants throughout the 70-day cycle.
