Description
Elymus sibiricus 'Meginsky' is a variety of Siberian wild oat (Elymus sibiricus L.) bred at the M.G. Safronov Yakut Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture and included in the Russian Federation State Register in 2020. The variety features an upright, weakly branched stem reaching up to 70–96 cm in height, a smooth hollow green culm, and oval leaves measuring 8–11 cm in length and 0.8–1.2 cm in width. The inflorescences are multi-flowered heads of a spherical shape on stalks up to 5 cm long, while the root system is taprooted.
'Meginsky' is characterized by high winter hardiness and drought resistance, while also tolerating short-term flooding well. The variety demonstrates medium resistance to lodging and weak susceptibility to powdery bunt. Forage yield ranges from 30–40 c/ha (in some estimates – up to 444 c/ha as green mass), and seed yield is 1.5–2.0 c/ha.
The variety is suitable for inclusion in grass mixtures and is used on long-term cultivated pastures, especially under the conditions of Central Yakutia and the Lena-Amga interfluve. Thanks to its high productivity and adaptation to extreme climatic conditions, 'Meginsky' is a valuable resource for increasing the yield of meadow lands of lowland meadows and in complex zoned technologies for cultivating forage crops.
